Clock Management in Madden NFL

What players can and cannot use during their Madden NFL matches

Updated yesterday

Clock management strategies are an important aspect of gameplay in Madden. This article outlines the rules surrounding various clock-related features to clarify what is allowed and what is prohibited.

Allowed Clock Management Tactics

  1. Running Down the Clock - Players are allowed to run down the clock during gameplay. No rule prohibits this action, and it can be considered a valid strategic approach.

  2. Chew Clock - The "Chew Clock" feature is permitted in PlayVS matches. Players may use the in-game "Chew Clock" feature to automatically reduce the time between their own plays. This tactic is recognized as part of normal gameplay and does not impact their opponent when their opponent is in possession of the ball.

Prohibited Clock Management Tactic

  1. Accelerated Clock - The "Accelerated Clock" game setup feature is not allowed in PlayVS Madden matches. Enabling this feature will have the clock automatically run down the time for both teams, and therefore violates the game rules.

Key Distinction Between Chew Clock and Accelerated Clock

It is important to note the difference between "Chew Clock" and "Accelerated Clock":

  • "Chew Clock" is an in-game feature that shortens the time between plays and only impacts the player who has the feature enabled once the game begins. This feature can be toggled on/off at any time.

  • "Accelerated Clock" is a pre-match feature that, once enabled, will shorten the clock automatically from the beginning of the match. This is specifically prohibited in PlayVS Madden matches and must be called out immediately.

What if my opponent enabled Accelerated Clock?

During the first quarter, a team may exit the game entirely once noticing that the accelerated clock is on.

Matches that have entered the second quarter, or have been completed in their entirety without prior notification in the match lobby chat of the enabled feature, will have their results upheld, with no expected action taken by League Officials.

The PlayVS Madden Leagues are being run by PlayVS. The PlayVS Madden Leagues are not sponsored by Electronic Arts Inc.
