Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Rules and Guidelines

Rules and guidelines for matches with the AIA.

Updated yesterday

For additional guidelines, please refer to the following PlayVS rulebooks:

AIA League on PlayVS

The AIA league consists of AIA member schools on the PlayVS platform. The cost to participate is $1,800 per school year, as invoiced by the AIA. This includes the opportunity to participate with as many students as you like in as many games as you like, sanctioned by the AIA in both the fall exhibition and spring championship seasons. The cost covers league customization and a live in-person semi-final and championship event to conclude the 11-week spring season. Games sanctioned by the AIA include League of Legends, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros, and Marvel Rivals. If you wish to participate in the non-AIA league-sanctioned game, your school may choose to do so through the various game offerings on PlayVS.

Costumes & Customizations

Teams must adhere to the following rules regarding character costumes and customizations:

Character Cosmetics

  • All characters must be set to their default costume & MVP animations before the start of each match.

  • Alternate character costumes are prohibited.

  • Alternate MVP animations (selected separately from costumes) are prohibited.

  • Avatars, Nameplates, Sprays, Emotes, Lord Icons, and Emojis may be chosen and/or used at the player’s discretion.

Initial Warnings

  • The first time any player from a team uses a character with an alternate costume equipped, the entire team will receive a warning.

  • Teams may avoid the warning by requesting a restart before a game of record is established to avoid a warning or penalty from league officials.

    • If a restart was requested before establishing a game of record, teams must back out and restart the game.

    • Restarts must be played on the same map with the same bans/locks as the original game.

  • In the event of multiple violations, the match must be paused so that a League Official may intervene and issue a penalty, per Repeat Violations.

Matches played and completed with alternate costumes will be counted as a game of record if a League Official is not notified of the violation.

The ban/lock phase must be completed before a team requests a restart for an accidental costume selection. The ban/lock phase should not be interrupted to address a costume violation.

Repeat Violations

  • Each team will be allowed one (1) warning for violating the Character Cosmetic rules.

  • After receiving a warning, repeated Character Cosmetic violations will result in penalties at the discretion of league officials, and may include game loss and/or player suspension.

Screenshots and/or recordings of the violations will be required in order to properly enforce this rule.

Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate

Ethernet / LAN Adapter Required

All competing teams must maintain a hardline connection, with a minimum of three (3) Mbps upload speed and a LAN adapter to participate.

If a game is found to be lagging, it must be ended within the first 60 seconds for further review. Any completed game will not be open to review. Teams will perform a latency test by starting a new game that will not affect the match.

If the latency remains, teams must share their NAT Type and photo evidence that their device is connected via the LAN Adapter, and contact PlayVS Support for further assistance in the match.

Teams using a wireless connection to compete are subject to an immediate match penalty, at the discretion of League Officials.
