Scholastic Summary of Changes and Additions (Fall 2026)

Key updates to our rules for the upcoming scholastic year.

While we will highlight all significant adjustments below, we encourage all coaches and players to review the detailed points and the rulebook for your game title.

League-Wide Updates

New

  • Starting this Fall 2026, PlayVS is transitioning to a paid competition model. More information on this transition can be found in the PlayVS 2026-27 League Updates FAQ, and schools needing financial assistance should see our PlayVS Fundraiser Guide.

  • As always, several leagues offer their own league schedules and unique game title rules this season. Once available, these schedules & rules are available in the published alternative schedules.

  • Competitive Leagues will now be offered at the Middle School level. These leagues will align with the High School competitive league scheduling. Teams enrolling in a competitive league for the first time can see our Playoffs FAQ for a look ahead at the end-of-season festivities.

  • Recreational Leagues will now offer a smart-scheduled match at the standard match time (4:00 PM Local), as well as two (2) additional queues, utilizing the recreational queue to find additional matches weekly at the school’s discretion.

Competitive leagues in Middle School have been a long time coming. We are starting small with leagues in certain esports that have remained healthy since middle school competition was introduced, and look forward to expanding our competitive offerings as soon as we feel we can.

On the other side, Recreational leagues continue to prove beneficial to our schools that are new to the platform, and for our younger players who are getting healthily introduced to the world of competitive gaming.

However, the adjustments we made to Recreational leagues in the Spring did not land as we hoped. With competitive leagues being offered for our Middle School players now, we wanted to offer a hybrid of our two scheduling systems. Matches will remain optional in recreational leagues; however, teams that want to treat this as a training ground to foster budding competitive players will now be able to do so with scheduled matches.

Competition Rulebooks

New

  • Added 1.2 Membership Fee

    • Added language surrounding the paid competition model into our rules. Teams that do not finalize their payment plan are subject to removal from PlayVS Competitions.

  • Added 3.4.1 Roster Locks

    • Added a dedicated section for a rule that has been in place for years. The rule itself remains the same, with solo esport rosters locking at the end of Week 4, and team-based esport rosters locking one week before playoffs.

  • Added 4.2 Consoles and Ximming

    • Ximming is a term used to describe the usage of a mouse and keyboard on consoles without detection, enabling console players to gain a competitive advantage. Any players found to be ximming will be subject to penalties at the sole discretion of PlayVS Officials.

    • Previously only in a few title-specific rulebooks, this rule has been added to clarify that at all times ximming is prohibited.

  • Added 5.1.8 Tournament

    • Added a dedicated definition for tournaments on the PlayVS platform.

Updated

  • Introduction and Purpose

    • Updated for clarity now that we offer both Competitive and Recreational leagues.

  • 3.1 Roster Requirements

    • Teams may only play one (1) player down in all team-based esports.

    • Clarified that at least one (1) coach must be available in the event of a rule or conduct violation.

  • 3.2 Coach

    • Clarified that unresponsive coaches will also leave teams subject to match penalties.

  • 6.1.4 Grace Period

    • Reworked the rule for clarity and to ensure the proper protocol is followed when a grace period is needed, or for when a team does not arrive to the match within the first fifteen (15) minutes.

  • 7.2 Game of Record

    • Added that pre-match setup violations, such as missing or mismatched game accounts, must be addressed before GOR is established.

  • 7.3.3 Disputes During a Match

    • Clarified that matches must be paused for League Officials to properly review the dispute, as otherwise continuing the match may result in a denial of the dispute.

  • 7.8 Unforeseen Uncontrollable Circumstances

    • Added that individual scholastic events and holidays that are posted in advance of the season on public school/district calendars do not qualify for this exemption.

  • 9. Forfeits

    • 9.1.1 No-Shows - Clarified that teams that are not available, or do not follow the Grace Period, will receive a forfeit.

    • 9.1.2 Inability to compete - Clarified that reschedules and uncontrollable circumstances can grant an exception.

    • 9.1.7 No coach available - clarified that while a Team Captain may speak on behalf of the team, a Coach is still required to be available in the event of an issue.

    • 9.1.8 Playing from home - Stated that teams are subject to their own school, district, and/or state play from home policies. By default, PlayVS allows teams to compete remotely when/where necessary.

  • 10.4 Match Communications

    • Rules on communications with active players are now title-specific.

With the transition to a paid model, we wanted to add a clear rule around the membership fee for our community to reference. While teams may start competition while they are ironing out their payment, teams will not be able to continue competing into the season if they have not completed payment.

Next, we’ve received quite a bit of feedback over the years surrounding our communications rules once the player(s) enter the game. We have moved our communications rules to be title-specific, and where possible, have replicated the ruleset present at the collegiate or professional level.

The remainder of these updates are made to provide more clarity on our existing rules, as opposed to true changes. The most notable being the rules around the Grace Period (stating how teams can use this rule, and when a team can claim a win due to their opponent violating that rule) and Match Disputes (clarifying that a match must be paused for our team to properly review any issues).

New

  • Aligned the Middle School Competition Rulebook with the High School Competition Rulebook for clarity.

  • Added 2.2.5 Competitive Eligibility

    • With the addition of competitive leagues for Rocket League, the requirement of players being at or over the age of 13 at the time of the match has been reinstated for those specific leagues.

    • More information on this requirement can be found here.

  • Removed 3.7 Private Rosters

    • There are no leagues that will utilize Private Rosters, so this section has been removed.

Updated

  • 10.4 Match Communications

    • Rules on communications with active players are now title-specific.

With the addition of competitive leagues, the majority of these changes were to align our Middle School rules with the existing High School rules.

The most important addition is that with the return of competitive leagues, teams are once more subject to the publisher guidelines. For Rocket League, participating players must be at least 13 years of age at the start of the match.

General Title-Specific Updates (ALL TITLES)

New

  • Added 1.7 Specific Rules - Coaching

    • Coaching rules are now unique to each game title.

Updated

  • Updated to the 2026-2027 school year.

  • 1.2 Roster Requirements now include the minimum number of players needed to compete in a PlayVS match for each title.

Our previous rules around a team’s roster aimed to provide flexibility and avoid forfeits when it didn’t impact the opposing team. However, this resulted in more confusion starting the match.

In all instances, schools may only compete while missing one (1) player for team-based esports (i.e., a Marvel Rivals team must have at least 5 players in the lobby to compete. Less than that requires that the teams reschedule, or the team in violation must forfeit the match).

Lastly, the individual titles now have a specific rule surrounding coaching, and when a coach is eligible to communicate with their players. The rule will vary, as different competitive scenes have their own perspectives on how this process works. We believe this update strikes a balance between what the students can expect as they continue to compete in their respective esport, and what the coach can provide once a game of record has been established. For quick access, here's an overview for each title:

  • Always Allowed (NEW)

    • Chess (Recreational Leagues Only)

    • Fortnite

    • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

    • Rocket League

    • Splatoon 3

  • Allowed during Pre-Match Setup/Stoppages (Original Rule - No Change)

    • League of Legends

    • Marvel Rivals

    • Overwatch

    • Pokemon UNITE

    • Street Fighter 6

    • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

    • VALORANT

  • Always Prohibited (NEW)

    • Chess (Competitive Leagues Only)

    • Hearthstone

    • Madden NFL

Fortnite: Zone Wars

New

  • Added 3.3 Match F.A.Q. - In-Game Cosmetics

    • As not all in-game cosmetics are universally appropriate, players should use discretion and obtain approval from their coach before using them.

    • Inappropriate cosmetic usage may be submitted as a Behavior Report after the match.

Updated

  • 3.1 Pre-Match Setup

    • Removed the requirement to disable in-game voice chat before starting a match. Players instead will set Voice and Text Chat features to Friends Only.

Our previous rules stated that Voice Chat must be set to OFF, which negatively impacted players who were unable to use third-party software to communicate with their teammates. With this update, players can communicate with their teammates and avoid communicating with their opponents by following the provided steps.

Additionally, as Fortnite allows in-game avatar customization, this title is subject to the guidelines surrounding in-game cosmetics within the PlayVS Code of Conduct.

League of Legends

As League of Legends allows in-game character customization, this title is subject to the guidelines surrounding in-game cosmetics within the PlayVS Code of Conduct.

Madden NFL 27

The latest edition of Madden NFL arrives on August 13th, 2026. This section will be updated shortly after with any new and updated rules to align with the newer version of the game.

Mario Kart™ 8 Deluxe

New

  • Adjusted 1.6 Match Format

    • All matches will now have the same game format of six (6) races per game.

  • Adjusted 1.7 Specific Rules - Track Selection

    • Players may now select tracks, and once a track is played, it is removed from the pool for the remainder of the six (6) race game.

  • Added 1.7 Specific Rules - Reporting Track Selection Violations

    • Track selection violations have been moved to their own dedicated section. The 15-point penalty for selecting ineligible tracks, and the process to report this penalty to League Officials, remains the same as previous seasons.

    • Repeated tracks picked via Random selection will not be penalized.

After review of the feedback provided by coaches, the one clear consensus was that the change to four (4) races for the preseason and regular season led to matches ending too quickly, while not allowing a team that was down any opportunity to come back. To address this, and make it easier for teams transitioning from the regular season to playoffs, all games will now be six (6) races.

We have also added the ability for teams to select tracks, reducing the total number of track options to eight (8). Selecting tracks allows teams to develop specific strategies and avoids a significant amount of RNG that was created under the previous random-only rules.

Additionally, we wanted to note that we are looking for more detailed feedback on the overall match format for Mario Kart this season. We’ve received enough feedback in our support channels and Discord to investigate, but not enough that could warrant a widespread change to our rules. If you have feedback on things like our team-based ruleset, map selection process, or any other rules for this title, please share those with us via support@playvs.com - Thanks!

Marvel Rivals

New

  • Removed 1.8 Costumes and Customizations

  • Added 3.3 Match F.A.Q. - In-Game Cosmetics

    • As not all in-game cosmetics are universally appropriate, players should use discretion and obtain approval from their coach before using them.

    • Inappropriate cosmetic usage may be submitted as a Behavior Report after the match.

Updated

  • 1.7 Specific Rules - Game Mode and Map Pool

    • Maps have been updated to reflect the current in-game Competitive Map Pool.

We have updated the Map Pool to reflect the current competitive ruleset in Marvel Rivals.

Additionally, 1.8 Costumes and Customizations has been fully removed from the rulebook and replaced as a guideline provided in the PlayVS Code of Conduct. We felt that matches were too often being paused or stopped entirely due to cosmetics that did not impact the competitive integrity of the match. Players are now expected to obtain coach approval prior to using cosmetics in-game to avoid any violations, and behavior reports may be submitted to our team should a user violate this new guideline.

Overwatch

New

  • Added 3.3 Match F.A.Q. - In-Game Cosmetics

    • As not all in-game cosmetics are universally appropriate, players should use discretion and obtain approval from their coach before using them.

    • Inappropriate cosmetic usage may be submitted as a Behavior Report after the match.

Updated

  • 1.7 Specific Rules - Game Mode and Map Pool

    • Added Junkertown to, and removed Watchpoint: Gibraltar from, the Escort Map Pool

    • Added New Queen Street to, and removed Runasapi from, the Push Map Pool

    • Game 6 Tiebreakers will now be played on Lijiang Tower.

As Overwatch allows in-game character customization, this title is subject to the guidelines surrounding in-game cosmetics within the PlayVS Code of Conduct. We have also updated the Map Pool to reflect the current competitive ruleset in Overwatch.

    • Clarifying rules on how to add a non-playable trainer have been added.

  • Updated 3.2 Match Setup - Tournament Draft

    • Added the 5th and 6th Bans to Ban Phase #1

We have updated the match format and tournament draft process to reflect the transition to three (3) Pokémon bans per game. Additionally, we’ve added some clarifying language on how to properly start the match with a bot if only four (4) players are available for a team on match day.

Rocket League

New

  • Added 3.2 Match Setup - Missing Player Protocol

    • Clarifying language on how the match is affected when competing with less than three players.

We’ve added some clarifying language on what teams can expect if a match is expected to occur 3v2/2v2.

Street Fighter 6

New

  • Removed 1.8 Costumes and Customizations

  • Added 3.2 Match Setup - Missing Player Protocol

    • With the new Concede Series feature, the steps for how to proceed in a match if a player is missing (resulting in a 3v2 or 2v2 match) have now been clearly stated in the rulebook.

We have added guidelines for teams missing a player to use the new Concede Series to proceed through the match without contacting support.

Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate

New

  • Added 3.2 Match Setup - Missing Player Protocol

    • With the new Concede Series feature, the steps for how to proceed in a match if a player is missing (resulting in a 3v2 or 2v2 match) have now been clearly stated in the rulebook.

We’ve added guidelines for teams missing a player to use the new Concede Series to proceed through the match without contacting support.

VALORANT

New

  • Added 1.6 Match Format - Settings

    • A new setting, Record Replay, will be now be set to ON for all matches.

  • Added 3.3 Match F.A.Q. - In-Game Settings: Cheats

    • While Cheats must still be set to OFF by default, teams may now agree to turning them on. This section highlights the process for using them fairly, and the penalty for improperly activating them.

Updated

  • 1.7 Specific Rules - Game Mode and Map Pool

    • The VALORANT Map Pool has been updated to the current competitive rotation.

We have updated the Map Pool to reflect the current competitive ruleset in VALORANT.

We’ve also added guidelines for the in-game lobby setting for Cheats. While the name inherently clashes with our competitive integrity concerns, the setting can be quite helpful when enabled and used honestly. We’ve added clear guidelines on when the setting may be turned on, which selections may be used in a match, and the penalty that can be expected when the process is not properly followed.
