What coaches, parents, and players need to know about Fortnite: Zone Wars

Fortnite is an online video game platform developed and published by Epic Games. It hosts a variety of game modes and experiences created by both Epic Games and the broader community. Fortnite is rated T for Teen.

PlayVS Fortnite competitions will not feature the Battle Royale mode. Instead, we will be running a popular team vs team mode called Zone Wars. Zone Wars is a popular game mode that is a fast-paced, condensed version of the battle royale format.

Game Details

What is the game objective of Fortnite: Zone Wars?

Zone War’s primary objective is to be the last team standing, outlasting all opponents. The playing area is relatively small and rapidly shrinks, forcing players to engage in skirmishes using their building and combat skills to outlast their opponents.

What is PlayVS Zone Wars?

PlayVS Zone Wars is the following:

  • A custom island built using Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).

  • Specifically made with player competition in mind for the PlayVS ecosystem.

  • Fast paced 2v2 team battles that take place across a variety of different arenas. The first team to win 10 rounds, wins the match.

What platform will the game be played on?

While we recommend competing on PC & Gaming Consoles, as these are the main platforms used by the highest level of competition, Fortnite offers crossplay support for the following platforms:

  • Windows (PC)

  • Playstation 5

  • Xbox One Series X/S

  • Nintendo Switch

  • Android & iOS devices

What hardware or software will be required to play?

PC Requirements (Per Player)

  • PC with the minimum/recommended requirements

  • Mouse & Keyboard or Compatible Controller

  • Headset with microphone for team communication

  • Epic Games Account with Fortnite installed

Playstation Requirements (Per Player)

Xbox One Requirements (Per Player)

  • Copy of Fortnite for the Xbox One/Series X/S

  • Xbox Console & Compatible Controller

  • Headset with microphone for team communication

  • An active Xbox Live Account & Subscription

Nintendo Switch Requirements (Per Player)

  • Copy of Fortnite for the Nintendo Switch

  • Nintendo Switch Console & Compatible Controller

  • Headset with microphone for team communication

How do I download Fortnite?

Fortnite is free to play.

Fortnite Zone Wars is a game mode in Fortnite. You do not need a specific download or DLC for it; you only need to download the main Fortnite game.

To download Fortnite for PC:

  1. Before you begin, ensure your computer has enough storage to complete the installer. Fortnite requires about 90GB of space.

  2. Download the Epic Games Launcher.

  3. Once installed, open the Epic Games Launcher app, you will need to login/create an account to access the application.

  4. Search for Fortnite in the search bar and proceed to download the game.

Competition/Match Information

What is the match format?

Teams of two players will compete against each other in a Best-of-3 games format. Each game the first team to reach 10 round wins. The first team to 2 game wins will be awarded the win for the match. Each game lasts about 20 minutes on average.

What days will Fortnite: Zone Wars be played on?

Fortnite: Zone Wars’ official match days will be on Thursdays.

Where can I find resources to improve my play?

Fortnite Zone Wars is a popular competitive game mode within Fortnite. Many high level players provide in depth tutorials and guides on Youtube for Zone Wars specifically. These can range from beginners guide on gameplay basics to extensive strategy planning around the zone. Top players also stream their gameplay on Youtube and Twitch. Recording and reviewing your own team’s matches can also help to study and further improve gameplay.
