Overview

  1. Teams will have 30 minutes after the match start time to join the lobby. Failure to do so will result in a forfeit.

  2. The Home Team creates the private matches following the instructions displayed on PlayVS and must only start the game after all players have entered the lobby.

  3. Coaches and players are encouraged to communicate with the opposing team via lobby chat.

  4. No spectating. Coaches/Players cannot join a match as a spectator. If either team is found to be spectating the match, it’s an automatic loss for that round or match at PlayVS' discretion.

IT Steps: Day of Match (at least 1 hour before)

  1. Restart all consoles.

  2. Update the patch for the game by starting the game on each console, as this will trigger a check for any updates.

  3. Give your IT department a heads up and have them on standby if any technical issues come up during matches.

Match Setup - Home Team

Add Your Teammates & Opponents

The Home team’s captain will submit their Switch friend code inside PlayVS Match Lobby Chat. All players must submit a friend request to this captain. The home team captain will then accept the requests and proceed to making the game lobby.

Add the Team Captain

From the Nintendo Switch home screen, press up to access the "User Profiles". Navigate to your account and select "Add Friend". Select "Search with Friend Code" and enter the Friend Code the Team Captain has listed in PlayVS Match Lobby Chat. Once you’ve found them, send them a friend request.

The lobby leader must add all of the opposing players to ensure that they can join the lobby. Once you've sent the friend request, please allow for a few minutes for your opponent to accept and create the match.

Start Mario Kart™ 8 Deluxe

Setting Up the Match as Team Captain

From the Nintendo Switch home screen, press up to access the "User Profiles". On this screen, you will find your Friend Code (SW-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX). Share this code with your team and your opponents in Match Lobby Chat.

After you have shared your code, click "Add Friend", and then select "Received Friend Requests". Your teammates and opponents' friend requests will appear here. Be sure to accept them.

Open Mario Kart8 Deluxe from the Nintendo Switch System menu and load into the game.

From the main menu, choose "Online Play", then choose "Friends".

Choose “Create Room”, and when it says “Would you like to create a room”, choose “Yes”.

Choose a character, your Kart frame, wheels, and glider.

Once you've confirmed your selections you'll be placed into the game lobby. Players will appear in the lobby once they have joined. Confirm in Match Lobby Chat with your Opponent's Captain that their team is all loaded in and ready to play.

Joining The Match as a Player

The Home team’s captain will be responsible for creating the game lobby. The instructions below will guide you through this process.

  1. Open Mario Kart™ 8 Deluxe from the switch menu and load into the game.

  2. Choose "Online Play", then choose "Friends".

  3. You will see the Lobby Host online with a small checkered flag near their name. Choose this player's lobby and join it.

  4. Choose your character and Kart customization options. All characters and Kart configurations are approved for play.

    • Players are allowed to change character and Kart configuration between races by pressing "Y" button while in the lobby between races.

    • Ensure your players do not accidentally leave the lobby!

  5. Go to the PlayVS Match Lobby chat and confirm that your team has fully connected to the game. Once all of the players have joined, the Home Captain will choose the proper settings for the match and the races will begin.

Configure Your Settings

Once all players have joined, the Home Captain will choose the proper settings for the match. The Team Captain will press the "A" button to access the Match Configuration settings.

  • Set 150cc Race

  • Set teams to "Team Game"

  • Items set to "Normal Items"

  • COM set to "No COM"

  • COM Vehicles set to "All Vehicles"

  • Set Race Count to "6 Races"

  • Select "OK"

The Home team captain will now set up the teams by placing all home team players on the red team and all opposing players on the blue team. Select "OK" and the match will begin.

Get Ready!

The Track for each round will be selected at Random. All players must choose “Random” from the Track list to ensure that this is done. If a player does not choose “Random”, their team may be subject to a point penalty as outlined in the Mario Kart™ 8 Deluxe Rulebook.

Post-Game Process

  • Players will share the results of each game and any screenshots with their coach.

  • All coaches are responsible for inputting the results of all games of the match within 2 hours of the last game played.

  • All coaches will input the results by selecting "Add Game Results" from "Mission Control".

  • Opponents will have 30 minutes to accept the match request. In the event that the opposing team does not show up within this 30 minute window, the match can be recorded as “Opponent Forfeit”.

Important: By default, rulebooks overrule game day protocols. Please reach out to support if you find conflicting information.
