Scholastic Summary of Changes and Additions (Fall 2025)

Summary of changes and additions to our rulebooks.

Introduction and Purpose

For the 2025-2026 High School and Middle School seasons, we have made many new changes/additions to a number of our rulebooks. In an effort to create more visibility of new additions and changes made to rulebooks for the Fall, League Officials have put together a list of edits. Available in select states.

While this list should cover the majority of all changes, it may not include small wording adjustments made to portions of rulebooks. We encourage all coaches and players to review the detailed points below as well as the rulebook for your game title.

Competition Rulebooks

New

  • 4.1 Live Event Equipment

    • Added language around use of personal equipment during live event competitions. If there are issues with personal equipment, players will have to use equipment provided by the event venue.

  • 5.1.4 League to Definition of Terms

    • A group of teams that regularly play against one another. There are two distinct types of PlayVS leagues: (a) Recreational and (b) Competitive.

  • 7.7.3 Official Broadcast Matches

    • Created guidelines around official broadcast matches.

    • Broadcast matches may have a tech test before the start of the official match.

Updated

  • Updated to the 2025-2026 year where needed.

  • 2.1 Student Enrollment

    • Added state to groups that can determine exceptions for enrollment.

  • 3.3 High School Team Captains

    • Clarification that coaches still need to be present (physically or virtually) to address issues.

  • 3.5 Player In-Game Names

    • Added line to explain possible consequences for failure to change a name in violation of rules.

  • 5.1.6 Season:

    • Added differences between recreational and competitive leagues.

  • 5.2.2.1 Playoff Eligibility

    • Added line to clarify that recreation leagues will not include playoffs or championships.

  • 5.2.3 Playoffs

    • Changed table Team Breakpoint to Number of Teams to better explain how many playoff eligible teams are needed for different bracket sizes.

  • 5.3 Regular Season Tiebreakers

    • Changed bullet points to include new tiebreaker formats: Opponent match win percentage (OMW%) and Opponent opponent’s match win percentage (OOMW%).

  • 6.2.7.1 Shared School Game Accounts

    • Adjusted language for Hearthstone game accounts to account for solos.

  • 7.4 Game Restart

    • Adjusted formatting.

  • 7.6.1 Results

    • Adjusted language to clarify both teams need to agree and report the final scores of matches using match assistant. If match assistant is skipped coaches will need to manually report.

  • 8.5 Playoff Reschedules

    • Added line to explain possible exceptions granted on a case by case basis as approved by PlayVS League Officials.

Removed

  • 6.2.5 Timeliness of Match Start

    • Repeating language already stated in 6.1.4 Grace Period.

New

  • 4.1 Live Event Equipment

  • 5.2.2.1 Playoff Eligibility

    • Added information for determining what makes team playoff eligible.

  • 5.2.3 Playoffs

    • Added information for Middle School playoff bracket sizes and playoff guidelines.

  • 5.2.4 Finals

    • Added information around finals consisting from top 2 teams in playoffs.

  • 7.7.3 Official Broadcast Matches

    • Created guidelines around official broadcast matches.

    • Broadcast matches may have a tech test before the start of the official match.

  • 8.5 Playoff Reschedules

    • Added information regarding playoff reschedules.

  • 8.6 Reschedules Due to Uncontrollable Circumstances

    • Added information for teams impacted by uncontrollable circumstances.

    • League Officials will require a reschedule for matches where any team is impacted.

  • Updated to the 2025-2026 year where needed.

    • Reworded information to better explain grace period rules (matching High School).


All Game Titles

Game Title Rulebooks

New

  • Re-organized certain sections of rulebook

    • Certain sections now are numbered differently.

  • 1.1 Game Account Connections now moved to the top of Rulebooks.

    • Majority of titles require all players to have game accounts linked.

    • Will reference unique cases for game specific rulebooks (ie: Smash).

Updated

  • Added tables to better organize information.

  • 1.3 Substitutions

    • Highlighted specifically when teams are able to make substitutions across all game titles.

  • 2.1 Equipment

    • Standardized required equipment.

  • Renamed Special Rules to Specific Rules.

  • 3.2 Match Setup now links to specific Game Title Match Instructions.

Removed

  • Subsections under specific headers have been replaced with bullet points.

  • 1.1 Definition of terms

    • Removed redundant language already present in the Competition Rulebooks.

  • 2.1 Equipment

    • Removed Table, Chairs, Headsets, Monitors, and other pieces of equipment that are not always required/used.

  • Phase details now under 1.6 Game Format.

  • Removed Roster Submissions under Roster requirements and moved Substitutions into its own section.

  • 3.2 Match Setup

    • Removed create lobby step that is covered in match instructions.

Match Instructions

Removed

  • Removed specific grace period length time in case of league dependent differences.

  • Removed spectating rules in Overview as covered in Game Rulebooks.


Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate

Updated

  • 1.1 Game Account Connections

    • Clarification added for account connections if using 1 switch to compete.

  • 1.3 Substitutions

    • Clarification added to clearly state subs must be made before the start of the match.

  • 1.6 Equipment Failure/Controller Disconnect is now its own section.

  • 2.1 Equipment

    • Added Nintendo Switch 2 and Built in LAN port (Dock).

Removed

  • Removed redundant language under 2.1 Equipment that was already covered.

Updated

  • Create and Join Arena steps moved to the top of the article.

  • Added game rules to Create Custom Arena step.

  • PlayVS Match assistant steps moved below Custom Arena creation steps.

  • Added clarification for specific Teams and Solos gameday steps.


Mario Kart™ 8 Deluxe

Updated

  • 1.1 Game Account Connections

    • Clarification added for account connections if 2 players using 1 switch to compete.

  • 1.6 Match Format

    • Replaced redundant language for determining a winner with tiebreaker explainer.

  • Moved Glitching guidelines to 1.7 Specific Rules.

  • 2.1 Equipment

    • Added Nintendo Switch 2 and Built in LAN port (Dock).

Updated

  • Added the specific rule guidelines for tiebreakers from the rulebook.


Splatoon™ 3

Updated

  • Renamed Game Disconnection to Player Disconnection as the process is for Players disconnecting from the game.

  • 1.6 Match Format

    • Highlighted information in regards to restrictions of using Splatfest Tees.

  • 2.1 Equipment

    • Added Nintendo Switch 2 and Built in LAN port (Dock).

Removed

  • Removed redundant language under 2.1 Equipment that was already covered.

League of Legends

New

  • 1.7 Specific Rules: Draft Tools

    • Teams are able to use online draft tools to facilitate the draft pick process as long as both teams agree to using them.

  • 3.2 Match Setup: Tournament Draft

    • Included an organized table to better explain the order for the tournament draft format.

Removed

  • Removed Campus Unlock section as it is no longer being offered.

Rocket League

New

  • 1.5 Stoppage of Play: Player Pauses

    • Added context for equipment failures due to the inability to pause an in progress match.

  • 3.2 Match Setup: Changing Rosters

    • Adjusted links to steps shown above this section.

Hearthstone

New

  • Hearthstone is now a solos title.

    • Individual players will still pilot 3 decks in a Best-of-Five (Bo5) game format.

  • 1.7 Specific Rules: Conquest Match Flow

    • Included an organized table to better explain the specifics for decks being locked after a player wins with that deck.

NBA 2K26

We are actively collaborating with our partners at 2K on the future of NBA 2K competition. Although a full Fall 2025 season for NBA 2K is unlikely, we remain committed to bringing compelling opportunities to our community in the future. You can catch all updates to our scholastic events and leagues by following us on social media and our website. We currently have a number of opportunities for competition available for Fall 2025, explore more at the PlayVS website.


Madden NFL 26

New

  • Game Format is now a Best-of-One (Bo1) game.

Updated

  • Updated language from Madden NFL 25 to Madden NFL 26.

  • 1.6 Game Disconnection

    • Added a line that clearly states if players leave the match using in-game functions, they will be issued a loss for the match.

  • 1.7 Match Format

    • Added advanced settings for lobby creation: Weather: Clear

  • Moved information on team selection to 1.7 Match Format.

Removed

  • Removed Game Options from Match Format as most of them were default recommended settings for individual players.

Updated

  • Adjusted lobby creation steps for Custom Game (Home Team) for Madden NFL 26.


Chess

New

  • Chess is now a Solos title.

    • Individual players will play a Best-of-Three (Bo3) Games format.

  • Regional Chess Leagues are now Recreational.

    • No playoffs or championships for recreational leagues.

  • Any references to the previous Teams Format has been adjusted for the new Solos Format.

  • 1.6 Match Format

    • Updated specifications for Solos competition.

    • Updated for Solos match format.

ChessKid

Fortnite: Zone Wars

    • Island Code: 3237-7822-8160.

    • The PlayVS Zone Wars map will still be available but not used in competitions.

Overwatch 2*

  • Hero Bans

    • After both teams have selected a Map and Side, Hero Bans will occur before the start of each map.

    • For a more detailed breakdown, please refer to Section 1.7 Specific Rules: Hero Bans in the rulebook.

  • Kill Cam

    • After setting up custom game lobbies using the competitive preset, teams will now need to toggle off Kill Cams from Settings Modes All.

  • Map Pool

    • Please refer to Section 1.7 Specific Rules: Game Mode and Map Pool in the rulebook for details on the map pool PlayVS Competitions will be using for the 2025-2026 Season.

Marvel Rivals

    • Alternate accounts must belong to the competing player and coaches need to share the reason for an alternate account being used.
